L’Elpidia: Handel Festival Halle
June 10 @ 3:00 pm - 6:00 pm
L’Elpidia, overo li rivali generosi HWV A1 (concertante performance)
Pasticcio by L. Vinci, G. M. Orlandini and others, arranged by G.F. Handel
G. F. Handel took material by other composers as the basis for his works probably more than any other composer of his time. L’Elpidia is a special kind of pasticcio, as in it Handel did not borrow from his own works, but mainly from Venetian opera. This finely tuned pasticcio (literally “ pie”), which G. F. Handel premiered in London in 1725, is virtually unknown. This is the second time that it will be performed in Halle. The orchestra of the Opera Settecento, one of the most remarkable early music ensembles in the UK, brings this little-known Handel pasticcio back to life. Playing on period instruments, they combine imaginative and compelling musical artistry with interpretations that are both appropriate and musically fascinating. The musicians are supported by a superb international ensemble of soloists.
