Sosarme: Handel Festival Halle
June 8 @ 7:30 pm - 10:30 pm
Sosarme, Re di Media HWV 30
Opera by G. F. Handel
A performance based on the Halle Handel Edition in the original Italian with German supertitles
“Unanimous applause from the first-night audience” wrote the press critics (J. Lange, 28.5.2016, MZ) after the premiere in 2016. Bernhard Forck presents this new, fully staged production for Halle with director Philipp Harnoncourt and the Handel Festival Orchestra (HFO). With its period instruments, the HFO shines “with individual string or wind solos” and delivers “ from the start a taut, dramatic sound…. repeatedly serving up beguiling melodies, hints of intrigue and even humour. Added to this is a gripping ensemble of protagonists.”
The action of the opera Sosarme, Re di Media was originally set in Coimbra, Portugal, under the title Fernando, Re di Castiglia. While he was composing it, Handel transferred it to the mythical and timeless Lydia. The opera’s premiere featuring the star castrato Senesino in the lead role was acclaimed by the London audience in 1732, which is why Handel put the work back on the programme in 1734 for a second series of performances. However, after that the opera fell into oblivion. Sosarme was rediscovered in the mid-twentieth century. Various recordings and stage productions ensued. The work now features on the programme of Halle Opera for the first time.
